Capel Celyn follows the events leading up to the 1965 Tryweryn flooding, when Liverpool destroyed and flooded a rural Welsh village in order to create a reservoir for drinking water. The community of Capel Celyn loudly and repeatedly resisted and their efforts have become significant in Welsh culture.
The play, set entirely within a living room, centres on husband and wife Osian and Arianwen as they attempt to navigate the overwhelming odds stacked against them. Community is integral to them both and and they now face losing not only their home but their sense of belonging too. Taking place over several years, the play focuses on three conversations between the two, as they fight to preserve their heritage and protect their future, all while shielding the other from their worry.
Capel Celyn is an intimate story of identity, love and resilience in the face of erasure.
