luck there’s ever been. Teach us some kind of lesson, so they say, but no one can remember
what it is. I wonder what Elin did that was so bad? She was turned back, the witch bloody
died, that should have been the end of it.”
The Notion of Recompense is a play that looks at generational trauma and relationships
through a folk horror lens.
The story follows Elin, the survivor of a witch’s curse, returning home, newly transformed
back to her human state after living for many of her formative years as an owl. The
punishment for a crime no one seems to remember. With the witch now dead, she must
now navigate the generational demands of her small town, along with the friends and family
she had left behind. New faces, old flames and even older grudges make adjusting back to
the old ways more challenging than expected. In an isolated village where the horror, magic
and beauty of myths and fairytales are part of everyday life, how can you get back to your
old self after going through a very intense change?
How do you grow up and not end up like your parents?
Who will be the next witch in the woods?
